to touch a gun, but earned a Congressional
Medal of Honor by single-handedly saving 75
men wounded behind enemy lines in
Okinawa. The film was nominated for six
Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best
Director, and Best Actor. Tomatoes gives it a
critic's score of 86, and audience approval
