Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the battle of the
Puebla. On May 5, 1862, Mexican soldiers
prevailed against Napoleon's French forces, even
though the French were better equipped, had
twice the numbers, and hadn't been defeated in
50 years. The battle was a turning point of spirit,
giving Mexicans a much needed taste of victory.
Since that time, (and with some involvement by
the U.S.,) no country in the Americas has been
invaded by any other European force.
